Note: I have been at this for far too long and need help. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO COMPLETE THIS SO I CAN DISCONNECT MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE AND HAVE EVERYTHING BE WONDERFUL? I'm using it right now with various external hard drives and all seems good. I’m afraid to disconnect my external hard drive. I then plugged in the same external hard drive and was able to locate my newly named Lightroom Catalog and everything came up again the way I want it. I replaced my HDD in my 2010 iMac for WD Caviar Black. When I relaunched Lightroom again on new IMAC all the transferred items were GONE and the default Lightroom showed up just as it did the first time I opened it. I recently replaced the 500 GB WD Blue hard drive of my 21.5 inch mid-2010 i3 iMac with a new 2. read up on topic and it was suggested that I close down Lightroom and then disconnect external hard drive. I disconnected the same external hard drive and a notice popped up saying something like “Lightroom is using this external hard drive and cannot be disconnected." the “?” did show up for the external hard drives not connected as expected.

You can get a TEKQ Rapide (enclosure w/drive) with an 1Tb SN550 in it from Amazon for about $245. Select your new hard drive from the sidebar. The cheaper SN550 (blue) is marketed at 2600Mb/s, which is plenty fast and doesn't run as warm. That SN750 is supposed to be capable of 3400Mb/s, so like I said, it's overkill.
Faster! I boot my iMac from the external drive, and it's so fast. Now that TEKQ Cube/WD Black 1Tb with the same test is 1910Mb/s write and 2073Mb/s read. I have a 2Tb My Passport USB3 drive, and I get about 113Mb/s write and 116Mb/s read using the Aja disk performance test with a 16Gig file. I would guess WD's less expensive Blue drive would work perfectly well, and still be super fast. It's capable of higher speeds than the TB3 bus and the enclosure can provide. I put a WD Black SN750 in one, and it screams.
Everything you need to put in the new hard drive is included and the video instructions are clear and simple. This hard drive and installation kit made everything go very quickly and smoothly this time around. If money isn't much of a factor, try a TEKQ Cube Thunderbolt 3 enclosure with a 1Tb NVME drive. I have replaced the hard drive in my 2009 iMac before so I pretty much knew what to expect.
